The Importance Of Online And Social Marketing In The United States

There was a time where the idea of marketing within the United States was pretty simple, you simply took out an add in your local newspaper, small-town billboards, or on the radio. Than came the Television and the many new methods that commercials brought to the marketing scene. Billboards and physical advertising continued to play a significant role, but the idea of having a commercial to catch potential customers and clients' eyes became equally important. The bad news was that TV and radio weren't cheap, and most small businesses instead had to turn to lower cost methods like newspapers and flyers.

The late-90s brought with it a great equalizer that would forever allow small businesses a much more affordable way to reach a large amount of their target market- the Internet. Since that time, the world wide web as evolved a lot, and as a result has really had a major impact on the way all sizes of businesses market.

Today more and more individuals, especially those in the 18-35 age group, are turning to the web to watch both TV and music. While these online alternatives do sometimes have commercials, they are usually much shorter and generally only reserved for major partners of companies like Hulu. This means that the age of radio and TV advertising is starting to fad away, making a great online presence even more important now than it was a few years ago.

So where does a business go if they want to build an online presence and attract new customers? According to a recent survey, conducted through Zoomerang and Growbiz Media, 731 small businesses were asked questions about their marketing strategies today, and more than 35% were making a switch to using social marketing media outlets such as Facebook, twitter and LinkedIn. A related survey conveyed that 93% of polled businesses believe that social marketing is very important in today's age, and will only continue to become even more key throughout 2012 and into 2013.

So why consider social marketing? For a start, getting set up with a Twitter, LinkedIn, or even Facebook account is simple, free, and can instantly link you to thousands that actually care about your product. Only people that “friend” or follow you will get your most current information and promotions, meaning that this traffic is very targeted. Many businesses are also creating blogs that connect to these social platforms and post back and forth, creating even more exposure.

Another highly social platform in general is a blog. Leveraging blogs is a great way to drive traffic to your business, even if you don't have your own. By creating high quality guest articles a business or marketing firm can generate additional traffic and Google recognition, which in turn brings a business more customers interested in their products.

While traditional, in-person marketing still has its place, online marketing is a growing opportunity and is something that businesses of all sizes, and budgets, can utilize to drive better traffic results, and attract more customers.
